 General Information about the International Baccalaureate Program
The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), founded in 1968, is a nonprofit educational organization based in Geneva, Switzerland.  It offers to schools three programs:

the Diploma Program (DP) for student in the final two years of school before university;
the Middle Years Program (MYP) for students aged 11 to 16;
the Primary Years Program (PYP) is for students aged 3 to 12.

There are 1,305 school authorized to offer IB programs.  These schools offer a total of 1,532 IB programs in 116 countries as of January 31, 2004.

 IB Authorization At Rogers Magnet
In 2002, the Stamford Board of Education approved Rogers Magnet School's request to implement the IB Primary Years Program, the goal of becoming an authorized school.  The authorization process takes, minimally, three years.  Throughout this process -- and beyond -- the IBO will work closely with Rogers' teaching and extracurricular staff to train them in the methodology of the IB program.

The IBO is providing Rogers Magnet with:

teacher training workshops
online access to 3,000 education resources, subject are experts and discussion sessions with teachers at IB schools throughout the world
procedures for school-based (internal) assessment of student work

The IBO's regional office and regional representatives will be working closely with Rogers Magnet throughout the application and authorization processes.  This close working relationship will continue on after IB authorization is granted!

 The Primary Years Program (PYP)
The Primary Years Program provides an opportunity for learners to construct meaning, principally through concept-driven inquiry.  Traditional academic subjects are part of the program, but it emphasizes the interrelatedness of knowledge and skills through a trans-disciplinary program of inquiry.

The PYP focuses on the heart as well as the mind and addresses social, physical, emotional and cultural needs as well as academic ones.  The PYP aims to develop in children:

sensitivity to the experiences of others through the curriculum
the characteristics listed in the student profile
the attitudes that are an explicit element of the program
the expectation of socially responsible action as a result of the learning experience.

Schools enjoy much flexibility in language of instruction and languages taught, after consulting with the IBO.

 What Rogers Magnet can expect from IBO authorization

Excellence in education:

IB programs provide a broad and challenging education.  The programs enable students to acquire important academic skills and to develop an international perspective and a commitment to their communities.

Ongoing support from the IBO:

The IBO continues to work closely with schools after they become authorized.  IBO regional offices organize regional conferences where IB schools can share their experiences and exchange ideas.  IB teachers can access curriculum materials and interact in real time with other teachers via the IBO's online curriculum center.  IB coordinators can download curriculum updates, examination schedules and other information from the IBO's Ibnet Web site.  The developing procedures for the assessment of student work.
